Rural Farmhouse

I moved into this small farm October 2014.  Sold it April 2016.
I wanted something with a few acres, a classic farmhouse and a place for my horses and a few chickens.
And after looking a little over two years, I finally found the ideal homestead.
Let's take a tour - outside and in.

On the property there is the farmhouse and three outbuildings.
An old barn, not in commission but lovely to look at.
A garage and shed.

I converted the shed to be used for a winter hen house.

Take a walk around the winter farm.
This was my first snowfall at the farmhouse and I captured it on my camera.

Let's head inside.
When I first moved into the house, I literally did not have any furniture.  One sofa to sit on.
Months before the move from my rental, I decided to sell all my furniture and start from scratch in the farmhouse.
Partially for personal reason and also because I needed the money.
And the process of re-decorating a home is a long one.
A fun one, but nevertheless it is a lengthy process.  Making decisions, what goes with what, and finding my personal style, plus it was important to me to keep the integrity of the farmhouse.

The Livingroom

The wall unit that houses the TV.
And off to the right, the dining room.

I love how sunny this house is.
In the rental I lived prior (I rented approx 1.5years before I found this place), it was always so dark and gloomy.
A very nice, happy change.

Here was the living room the Fall of 2014.
This is how the room looked when I initially moved in.
Since I did not have any furniture, I rented this set from Easyhome.

Before

And After

What a change indeed.

When I first started to decorate this room, I found it to be the toughest.
But in the end, it was my most favourite room in the entire house.  I was so pleased with it.
Bit of farmhouse style, a little eclectic here and there, with a few antique touches.
And always fresh flowers.  Therapy for the soul.

The Dining Room

When I initially got this dining room set I knew it needed a change.
I bought it off of Kijiji - the dining room table, six chairs and the china cabinet.
To say the least, they were a little run-down and dirty.
So I went to work with some Annie Sloan Old White chalk paint and new fabric to cover the seat pads.

At this point, I have just painted the chairs.
I am still determining if I want to paint the table and/or the china cabinet.
I lean more toward the china cabinet, I would paint it with the matching colour
and replace the glass windows with chicken wire.

Have a look before painting the chairs.

Before

Just as lovely in the "Before" state, to be sure.  But just in need of some updating.

And the after.

I love how bright this change made to this room.

The beautiful vintage buffet I bought off Kijiji.
I think a beautiful piece of furniture.

Always changing things around on it, swapping out lamps or creating new vignettes.

The before and after of this room.
A bright, cozy room for formal dinners and family gatherings.

The Kitchen
This room had not change much from when I moved in.
Will confess that I had difficulties with this room....it just did not speak to me!
So I left it plain and simple farmhouse.

Here a look at a few changes to this room.
Before

After

The few changes to this room were the curtains and the hardware.
Still keeping with the simplicity of this room.

The Bathroom

The window curtains in this room are the original from when I moved in.
I tried slate blinds, a bamboo blind but had problems with sizing.
Old farmhouse windows are hard to find coverings that fit.
Love the original vintage door, it adds to this room.

I kept with the white and ebony colours for this room.
I am quite please with how it all came together.
It is such a soft, gentle and soothing room.  Very pretty, very cozy.

Christmas

Christmas of 2015 was a fun one here on my little farm.  I stayed with a natural and neutral theme.
With traditional red and green's thrown into the mix.
The whole house was so pretty.

  1. Such a pretty place Diane. I luv everything you have done. It does take time... and going about it slowly gives it a sweet collected look. My favourite way to decorate.
Can hardly wait to see the rest.
    Happy Sunday.

  4. A farmhouse is a dream of mine also. For your kitchen, have you thought about adding some detail to the wall, maybe wainscotting like the bathroom (even if you keep it all white and not two different colors) or a board and batton treatment?

  5. You have a lovely home and are decorating it beautifully. I love the black gingham drapes with the white sofas-simple, but classic farmhouse. Your kitchen reminds me of mine. I added open shelving and added a lot of character with decor items. Looking forward to seeing more in the future.
