Mom, Maritimes and Marineland

When I was a little girl, about 8 or 9,
my Mom took us kids to Marineland in Niagara Fall, On.
Neither we nor she had ever been before.
I was told it was an amusement park.  There would be rides and such.

 I was so excited.
I had no idea at all there would be a whale jumping show.

At one point during our afternoon fun, Mom told us all we had to stop
what we were doing and head on over to where the shows were.
We got there late, half way through the performance.
I did not understand what was happening.

 Whales.
There were the largest beast I had ever seen.
I had never seen one before in my life.
They were ginormous.  The most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
I was so impressed.
As God as my witness....I though
Marineland must have gone to the ocean that day,
and brought the whales back just for this show.
And then they would bring them back when the park closed that night.

You must understand the ocean is about 2 days away from here.
I simply had no idea.

On the ride back home, I talked about my assumption to Mom.
She told me that they were not going back to the sea.  Marineland was their home.
I was so confused.
I cried so hard, I thought I was going to barf.
She was pretty quiet that night too.

My sweet Mom is from the Maritimes.  But has lived in Ontario most of her life.
I know she misses the sea.

We never returned to Marineland again.

There are some of us who can never be caged.

  4. I live 20 minutes from Marineland. I can say that although I have been there once I couldn't bring myself to see the whales or animal shows. Growing up watching pods of orcas make their way through the straights of the Pacific Ocean I felt like I would be betraying them somehow.
